Alex, you are spot on. Two of my favorites. Gary Paulson also wrote an interesting fictional piece called "Dogsong", I believe, and Joe Runyan's "Winning Strategies for Distance Mushers" is a good technical manual for the nitty gritty realities of starting a kennel and training a team to race.

I second both of Alex's recommendations. Both had laugh out loud moments, and a beautiful understanding of dogs. Paulsen is a great writer. Bowers wasn't too bad either, and his story was particularly compelling.

In addition to the ones you listed, I'd add "Winterdance: the Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod" by Gary Paulsen and "Back of the Pack" by Don Bowers.

Nice topic. We'll need some reading to get through the withdrawal! My fav is "Racing With Champions" by Lisa Fredric. Somehow, I really related to her, and loved hearing what Jeff King was like from her point of view (she handled and ran out of his kennel). Then I was lucky enough to get to know her last year in Nome. That was icing on the cake!
